Road users to benefit as Voortrekker Road bridge lane fully reopens after extensive rehabilitation

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directore is pleased to announce that the Eastbound lane of Voortrekker Road bridge, between Salt River and Maitland, will be fully reopened to vehicular traffic today, Tuesday, 28 April 2026.
‘I am very pleased to see this vital section of Voortrekker Road returned to full capacity. While the project faced various external delays, including the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the complex prioritisation of rail recovery, our focus has remained on the safety of our residents. The removal of these barriers marks the end of a long-standing bottleneck for commuters travelling toward Maitland,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
‘The 100 metre section of the Eastbound lane, located approximately 150 metres from the Salt River Circle, was originally closed as a safety precaution following a structural engineering assessment of the Voortrekker road over rail bridge following an extensive fire which caused significant damage to the structure. While the damaged bridge did not affect rail operations, the bridge structure required extensive rehabilitation work to ensure the long-term safety of motorists. I would further like to thank residents and business owners for their patience while this essential structural work was under way.’
To ensure a smooth transition and minimal disruption to the morning peak, the following schedule will be observed on Tuesday, 28 April:
- 08:30 – 09:00: City’s Roads Infrastructure Management crew and crane truck arrive on-site.
- 09:00 – 12:00: Removal of new jersey barriers, flexible bollards and final inspection.
- 14:00: The lane will officially reopen to all traffic.
The rehabilitation project was managed by the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA), with the City of Cape Town providing essential support, including the provision of safety barriers along the affected section of Voortrekker Road throughout the closure.
